Leaving Eugene |
The ride was fairly flat with mild undulations and for the first time since day one, the wind decided to cut me some slack. The McKenzie River is nothing short of gorgeous and my route followed it all the way to my destination. One of the most scenic, enjoyable rides I have ever experienced. I honestly don't know how the views could get any better.
A man driving a riding mower down the street stopped as I was taking a picture of the Leaburg Dam and asked me where I was headed. His name was Jeff and he was about my age and had an ex-wife in Wilton! Jeff doesn't go to Wilton. He asked me if I was going to cross the McKenzie Pass and I answered yes and that I was going to make the attempt tomorrow but wasn't sure if the snow was cleared. McKenzie Pass is closed to vehicle traffic until late June or early July but is often open to cyclists if they are able to plow one lane of roadway first. Jeff told me they opened the pass to cyclist last week and I should be fine. McKenzie Pass has some unique geographical conditions and the views are supposed to be amazing and is one of my first, "must see" venues of this trip. All I have to do tomorrow is climb 4,000 feet to get there! ouch....
This years Christmas trees on the hill |
I pulled into the RV Park in the early afternoon and found my tent site.....right on the same river banks of the one I had been following all day. I'm not quite sure how I will sleep in the tent tonight.....the rehearsals in my front yard did not go well but if all else fails, there is a clubhouse that stays open all night and I can crawl onto the sectional and crash!
Big climb tomorrow.....then hopefully drop down into Sisters.
Big
